Selecting the right tool can prevent the coat from damage due to matting and save you time picking up hair around the house. The basic equipment any pet owner will need is a brush, a comb, shampoo and conditioner, all suited for your pets coat type, a toenail trimmer and quick stop.
Brushes: They help remove the debris and dirt from the coat while stimulating the hair follicles and releasing the dead hair. They also work with the natural oils in the coat to help create the shine. Select a brush based on you pet’s coat and it condition.
Combs: used to help remove dead coat while checking to see if mats are still in the coat.
Shampoos and Conditioners: There are many types of shampoos available today which are very beneficial to all types of coats and problems. Before you bathe a dog make sure you remove all the matts. Wetting a matted coat will only set the matt deeper and closer to the skin creating a potential larger problem. Puppy shampoos are very gentle to a puppies sensitive skin and are usually tearless. Body building shampoos help give more fullness to a coat. Conditioners are used to help benefit the type of coat, as well as protect the coat. Natural oils maybe striped out of the coat due to heat and sun which we experience here in Az. Using a conditioner helps soothe the cuticle, adds moisture back into the coat and skin while helping build a healthier coat.
Toenail Trimmers: Long nails can change the way your pet walks and even cause long term damaged . Keeping them short will save on scratches to humans and flooring.
Undercoat rake: has wider spaced teeth can help remove the bulk of the coat while the pet is shedding.
Slicker Brush: a brush which helps remove dead coat and mats.
Furminator: a tool with closely spaced teeth to help grab the shedding coat. Remember dogs who do not shed will need regular grooming on a schedule every 6 to 8 weeks.
